At the State FCCLA Leadership meeting held in Athens, Bonaire Middle School received the Middle School FCCLA Chapter of the Year Award along with several other state awards. The state meeting was held on March 14 -16 at the Classic Center with over 1,500 youth in attendance. This year’s theme was “Saving the World, One Leader at a Time.”
Georgia FCCLA members enjoyed Aric Bostick’s inspirational presentation as he shared ways to “Get Fired Up for Life” during the opening session. At the conclusion, Bonaire Middle seventh grader Makaela Fitzwater presented her officer candidate speech on the topic of “How FCCLA Has Helped Me to Save the World One Leader at a Time.” She was re-elected the 2013-2014 Middle Level Representative. One of her major responsibilities is to help support and promote middle level FCCLA Chapters in Georgia.
On Friday, chapter members from Bonaire Middle presented their projects in state level competition including STAR Events and extemporaneous speaking. Five students competed in two STAR Events categories. Peyton Roark and Dylan Rigney received a gold metal in Chapter Showcase Display; Danny Alvarez, Jacob Holovach and Garrett Wurdeman also received a gold medal in Chapter Showcase Manual. The Chapter Showcase Manual team will advance to National STAR Events in Nashville, which will be held during the National Leadership Conference in July. Gabby Bibb competed in the state FCCLA extemporaneous speaking event. Abigail Ogden was the Chapter Voting Delegate.
Bonaire Middle FCCLA Chapter was honored to receive the FCCLA Honor Roll with Distinction Award, State Career Connection Award, State News Award and Middle School Chapter of the Year Award during the Recognition Session. After the recognition session, students and advisers attended the “City of Lights” Gala and Reception where they enjoyed karaoke and dancing.
On Saturday, chapter members presented their award winning projects and displays in Spotlights on Projects to showcase their work with other chapter advisers and members. Alice Mullis, the Bonaire Middle School FCCLA Chapter adviser, attended the adviser session and was elected serve on the Georgia State FCCLA Board of Directors. Mullis will serve in this position for the next three years. Chaperones for the trip were Dale Mullis and Shelly Fitzwater. Chris Fitzwater volunteered his time to serve as the conference paramedic during the three-day conference.
