Brown does it all: RBI and no-hits Cavaliers

How much of a relief was it for Garrett Brown to get his college signing with ABAC completed Thursday? The very next day, the Westfield right-hander only goes out and pitches a no-hitter.

And, Brown drove in the only run he would need to defeat Mt. de Sales 1-0 at home.

“He was awesome,” said coach Rob Fitzpatrick. “It was a good performance from both pitchers.”

Brown struck out 11 and overshadowed the work of Mt. de Sales’ Adam Barth, who only allowed three hits in six innings while fanning eight.

“(Brown) had command of all three pitches and found the strike zone,” said Fitzpatrick. “We played good defense behind him, and he just looked sharp.”

As is a baseball custom, nobody talks about a possible no-hitter while the game is still ongoing. Fitzpatrick said he wasn’t even aware of the milestone until the last hitter for the Cavaliers went to the plate and his assistant coach, Jeff Barfield, asked a simple question:

“You know what this is?” “You’re kidding me?” That was the brief conversation.

The only MDS baserunners were two hit batters and one walk. Perhaps what kept Fitzpatrick from thinking about a no-no was a situation where the Cavaliers threatened to score with runners at the corners and one out. He said the visitors tried a squeeze bunt, but the batter would miss the baseball and catcher Evan Williams began a rundown out.

Brown ended the inning on a whiff.

For his first-inning RBI hit, Brown battled a two-strike count. Fitzpatrick said you normally don’t think that will be a winning run so early, but Brown simply carried the Hornets to its first GISA Region 2-AAA win.

“Fortunately we came out on the good end,” he said.

Also last week, the Hornets went to Chula for a non-region contest and topped Tiftarea 5-2. All five runs scored in the first three innings.

Wayne O’Neal drove in three, and Barrett Stanley made three hits. Only one Tiftarea player, Dustin McAlpin, had hits (two) against three Hornet pitchers.

VETERANS WINS

Zach Johnson’s solo home run propelled the Veterans High Warhawks to a 4-3 come-from-behind win in Region 2-AAAA Friday at West Laurens High. Johnson’s blast broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh, and the Warhawks were able to overcome a three-run deficit and four errors.

R.J. Skeen pitched a complete game with five hits scattered and seven strikeouts. The home Raiders would stake a 3-0 lead, all runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Veterans never had a multi-run inning, but had one in each of the final four frames. Kal Dempsey had two hits, and Zane Conlon and Tyler Daughtry each brought in one.

The win is the second for Veterans in the region, the other coming on March 12 against Rutland High by an 11-0 final in six innings.

RUTLAND 19, PERRY 17

No, not a football score. Perry’s baseball team dropped to 1-1 in Region 2-AAAA in a game where each team had a nine-run inning. In all, there were 26 hits and 11 errors.

The visiting Hurricanes actually led 14-3 through three complete, but the Panthers scored 13 in a row making it 16-14 after five. Rutland had five runs over the sixth and seventh.

Steven Heath drove in four Perry runs on two hits, and Jake Farrell had three hits with one RBI.

HC 10, NS 6
Hunter Jackson struck out four in six innings, and though the Northside High Eagles scored four times in the final frame, it wasn’t enough to stop the Houston County High Bears from winning 10-6 in Region 2-AAAAA.

Houston scored six times in the fourth inning. Top hitters for the visiting club at Dyson Field were Hunt Smith with a two-run home run and Hunter Phillips with two doubles and an RBI. Justin Jones, Blake Jackson and David Umphreyville all singled in one, while Dalton Carriker and Josh Profit each had two singles.

Kendall Scott doubled for Northside, and Jesus Monserratt, Ethan Broome and Derrick Byrne each singled for an RBI.
