Trey Payne, used to delivering crushing blows as a football linebacker, crushed a baseball pretty good Thursday at Northside High’s Dyson Field.
With his three-run home run to centerfield in the bottom of the second inning, the Eagles owned a nine-run lead on fellow county school Veterans High. Payne drove in four runs altogether, and Northside cruised past the Warhawks 12-1 in five innings.
Left-hander Brent Sappe pitched a complete game. His only run allowed was in the third inning, and his only strikeouts – three in a row – came in the top of the fifth and final frame.
Veterans posed an early threat when Mickey Dugan doubled. He was standing on third base with two down, but Sappe got Micah Wells to ground out to Jason Gifford at third base.
Northside proceeded to score five times in the first inning, which had two errors on the Warhawks. Ethan Broome singled up the middle for one RBI, and Payne brought in the second. Kendall Scott’s sacrifice fly plated the third run, and after Gifford’s single Griffen Nauss belted a two-run double.
Payne’s home run capped off a four-run second inning for the Eagles. Broome doubled into an outfield gap for his second RBI.
John Herrera and Tyler Daughtry of Veterans singled back-to-back the third. Sappe ended it with two on base via a fly-ball out.
Jesus Monserratt and Tyler Flood hit consecutive doubles in a two-run bottom of the third.
