State command chief retires after 41 years of service
Air National Guard commander will retired during a ceremony held at the 116th
Air Control Wing on Friday.
Chief Master Sgt. Donald Camp will say
a farewell in front of distinguished guests, dignitaries, and fellow service
members after 41 years of dedicated service to the Air Force, ANG and our
country.
“For four decades I have committed myself
to helping officers and enlisted; equipping them with the best we have so they
could do the best they could do,” said Camp. “Because I literally
grew up in the Air Guard, I was able to effectively advise the commander about
our force.”
Camp, born in Atlanta, Ga., entered the Air
National Guard in October 1974 by way of Palace Chase, a program that allows
active duty Airmen and officers the opportunity to voluntarily transfer from
the regular Air Force to the Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve. He became
the state of Georgia command chief in Aug 2010 from his former position as the Command
Chief for the 116th Air Control Wing. Camp has deployed multiple times in support of world-wide military
operations during the course of his career.
As the state command chief, Camp has
been responsible for 3,500 people and has been deeply involved in several
programs at the state level. Camp aimed to motivate and recognize personnel
through the Outstanding Airmen of the Year Program; the Enlisted Promotion
Program; the Hometown Hero Salute Program; and the Enlisted Control Grade
Program.
“Don is one of the finest men with whom I’ve had the pleasure of serving,”
said Maj. Gen. Thomas Moore, commander of the Georgia Air National Guard. “I’m
going to miss having his wisdom and guidance everyday but I know he’s always a
phone call away.”
For exceptionally meritorious
conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements, Camp was
nominated for the Legion of Merit.
Maj. Gen. (retired) Tom Lynn, former
ANG assistant to the commander, Air Education Training Command, will preside
over the ceremony.
