HCHS student chosen for state advisory board

HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Houston County High School student

Alexander Pegues has been selected to serve on the State Superintendent of

Schools’ Student Advisory Council. Superintendent Dr. John Barge named 50

students from across the state to his 2012-2013 Student Advisory Council.  

More than 750 students from 121 districts applied to be a member of the Student

Advisory Council by filling out an application and answering an essay question.

Students were chosen based on essay answers and involvement in their school and

community.

 

“It was very difficult to choose the members of the Student Advisory

Council because there were so many great applications,” Superintendent

Barge said. “I’m excited about working with this group of students because

I know they will be prepared to share their ideas to make education work for

all students.”

 

As members of the council, the students will meet twice throughout the school

year to advise the State Superintendent on how state policies are impacting the

classroom. The Student Advisory Council will also discuss other

education-related issues and will serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors in

their respective schools. The first meeting was held Nov. 28, 2012, at the

Georgia Department of Education in Atlanta.

 

Superintendent Barge commented, “The Student Advisory Council allows me to

hear directly from students in our schools and discuss major initiatives with

them.  The Council also gives students the opportunity to share with me

their ideas and concerns, which we can use to shape future state policies.”

 

Houston County High School is located at 920 Highway 96 in Warner Robins. Dr.

Michelle Masters serves as principal.
