2019 Bears Brawl has competitive field that will include Florida team

The

annual Bear Brawl basketball tournament is back and this year’s boy’s field is

as diverse as it has been in years. Among the teams coming into Houston County

High School for the three-day holiday event will be a team from Gadsden County,

Florida and familiar returnees from Bleckley County, Crisp County and West

Laurens. “It’s going to be absolutely huge,” said Houston County

Bears head coach Don Hudson recently. “To have teams from different

places, regions, and classifications come to play at your home is always

big.”

“It’s

an honor to host this pre-Christmas tournament,” said Bears assistant

coach Matt Hopping. “We love how the community comes out to support these

local athletes.”

The

tournament begins on Friday with Bleckley, the Royals are currently 2-6

overall, and the Rutland Hurricanes playing at 4 p.m.

The

Warner Robins Demons, 8-1, are coming into the tournament on a seven-game win

streak, most recently defeating the Houston County Bears 62-58 and Westside

Seminoles 62-38 and Jones County 45-40 Saturday. The Demons will start the

tournament against the West Laurens Raiders, 1-6, at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The

Gadsden County Jaguars will make their way to Houston County by way of Havana,

Florida. Currently led by first-year head coach Steve Cherry, the Jaguars, 6-1,

will open the tournament against the Peach County Trojans, 2-4 at 7 p.m.

The

night cap will have the host Bears, currently 4-4 after defeating Cedar Grove

57-49 at the HypeSouth Hardwood Invitational on Saturday in Macon and West

Laurens 89-65 Thursday, playing the 0-2 Crisp County Cougars at 8 p.m. The

Cougars may be at full capacity next week after a few players on the football

team get back from playing in the AAA state title football game against Cedar

Grove at Georgia State Stadium.

With

plenty of basketball talent in the building for the weekend there is a chance

for players currently under the radar to catch a recruiters eye and Hudson

enjoys making that possible for both his players and others involved.

“College coaches come to one place and get to see top boys and girls

players,” said Hudson. “This tournament

 brings all the communities

together during the holidays with family that may not be able to make a normal

game. It’s going to be a great atmosphere and there’s nothing more merry for

Christmas than that.’

The

girl’s tournament will be held simultaneously at Feagin Mill Middle School. A

preview on the teams involved will be in Friday’s Journal.
