Perry Council OKs new budget

With practically no discussion, the Perry City Council unanimously passed the FY17 Operating Budget for the city at Tuesday’s council meeting.

The city’s current millage rate of 14.05 mills is still in place.

“We don’t anticipate an increase, but we won’t know until the tax digest is published in September,” said City Manager Lee Gilmour.

The city anticipates total revenues of $26.489 million, expenditures of $28.078 million, other revenues of $2.35 million, leaving a surplus of $761,100, said Gilmour.

In other action the council:

Appointed Joy Wimberly to the Perry Arts Council;

Accepted maintenance of certain infrastructure at Sanford Place Phase 3 Section 2 of The Woodlands of Houston subdivision; Phase 1 Section 2 of The Woodlands of Houston subdivision; and Blackhawk Reserve Phase 1 Section 2 of the Grand Reserve subdivision. These were new additions to existing subdivisions, said Gilmour;

Agreed to hire a design consultant for improvements to the tennis courts at Calhoun Park; and

Agreed to levy a $25 monthly fine to hotels and motels that were delinquent in paying the city’s hotel/motel tax.

The council’s next work session falls on Independence Day, July 4, and the council unanimously approved cancelling the session and not rescheduling it, as is customary. The next city council meeting will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 5.
