WRHS’s Smith top district media specialist
Warner Robins High School media specialist Doreen Smith has been named the District Library Media Specialist of the Year for the Middle Georgia area.
She will be recognized at this year’s Georgia COMO Conference in October with other district winners.
Smith was nominated for this award by Perry High’s media specialist Rhonda Walters, who stated, “She is a self-motivated teacher, leader, facilitator, school library media specialist, and learner who extends herself well beyond the library walls of Warner Robins High School.”
Walters continued, “As a fellow school library media specialist, I can think of no one in the state who could possibly represent our profession any better than Doreen Smith. Her dedication and standard of excellence place her among an elite group of professionals.”
Smith’s educational background includes a Specialist Degree in school library media from the University of West Georgia; a Master’s in library media from Georgia College; a Master’s in middle grades education from Berry College; and a Bachelor of Science from Berry College.
Smith is professionally affiliated with the Georgia Library Media Association as well as the Professional Association of Georgia Educators.
A few of Smith’s professional achievements include: coordinating and sponsoring a weekly school book club to encourage reading and compete in the Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl’s annual competitions; implementing and enhancing WRHS’ curriculum by instituting online databases, increasing non-fiction resources, and integrating technology skills into the library lessons and curriculum development; and collaboration with administrators and faculty to present information, literacy lessons, student research, and technology integration.
