Westfield’s Williams Twins verbally commit to Louisiana-Lafayette softball program
On Friday night the Westfield School Lady Hornets basketball team defeated visiting Augusta Prep and even their region record at 2-2. Freshman guards Emma and Ellie Williams contributed 15 and six points, respectively, during the victory. The twin sisters and Westfield softball stars have plans on contributing to another program, in a couple of year of course. Over the weekend the Williams sisters verbally committed to play their collegiate softball at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, a strong program that plays in the Sun Belt Conference. Regarding their decision on where to play college softball before they have even figured out who they are taking to junior prom the sisters say, “I just really like coach [Gerry] Glasco a lot,” said Ellie. “I also like that they are all about softball at Louisiana-Lafayette.” The family recently visited campus and according to accounts were impressed with the program and location.
Her sister echoed those sentiments, “I feel like coach Glasco and the Ragin’ Cajun program will be a really good fit for us,” said Emma. So did their coach at Westfield Danny Camp, “I’m excited for both of them, they have worked extremely hard to get this opportunity,” said Camp. “I’m happy they decided to play together and that they will get the opportunity to play for a coach they have tremendous respect for.”
Glaso, the coach Camp is referring to, took over the Ragin’ Cajun program last November after three seasons at Texas A&M and before that at the University of Georgia where he won over 280 games during his six year tenure. The programs previous head coach, Michael Lotief, was fired earlier that month for what refer to as a violation of school and University of Louisiana System policies. “It’s a softball factory over there,” said David Williams, the girls father about the Louisiana-Lafayette softball program. “We’re just so proud of them and we want the best for them.” Asked about the full academic/athletic offer from the school the girls received David added, “That’s pretty cool too.”
Natalie Williams, the girls mother, added, “The Lafayette Regional Airport is three miles away from campus, the coach has three daughters and they all play softball, for me as a parent this is a dream come true. What more could you ask for?”
Both of the Williams twins were not only starters for Camp on the 2017 GISA Region 1 state championship team at the Westfield School but major contributors that the Louisiana-Lafayette coaching staff amongst many others were in the early stages of recruiting. [The sisters made non-official visits to Syracuse University and the University of Michigan a year ago] For the time being the recruiting battle is over, the Williams twins are headed to to Louisiana to play for Glasco and the Ragin’ Cajuns.
“Louisiana-Lafayette is one of the top softball programs in the country,” said Camp. Now it’s one of the top softball programs in the country with a head start on their 2021 recruiting class in a big way with the commitment from the Williams sisters.
