Westfield wrestlers captured their fifth straight region

championship Thursday at the GISA Region 2-AAA duals championship hosted by Mt

de Sales in Macon. Westfield defeated Mt de Sales 66-12 and in the finals and

defeated Tattnall Square Academy, also 66-12.

“It was a good night for the team as a whole and we look

forward to the GISA state duals championships on Jan. 19,” said coach Mike

Thompson.

Following the region championship, Westfield traveled to

Dublin to the 10th annual Trinity Christian Invitational and won another team

championship. The 24-team field included returning state champion Bulloch

Academy with a wide array of other GISA challenges.

Westfield dominated the tournament in all rounds sending

eight of the 14 varsity wrestlers to the finals. Finalists included Josh

Kinnebrew (19-2, 106 lbs.), Chandler Bohanon (22-0, 126 lbs.), Bryce

Westmoreland (21-1, 132 lbs.), Griffin Cawthon (22-0, 145 lbs.), Conner Cawthon

(21-1, 152 lbs.), Austin Jenkins (17-2, 160 lbs.), Cotton Hammerle (16-2, 170

lbs.), and Ty Forrester 17-2, 285 lbs.).

Thompson said the championship round proved challenging, yet

successful, with Bohanon, Westmoreland, Conner Cawthon, Jenkins and Forrester

all winning first in their weight classes.

“The most accomplished victory in the finals has to go to

Bryce Westmoreland at 132 by defeating two-time state champion Mitchell Ball

from Bulloch in a decisive 12-4 major decision,” he said.
