Westfield 8th grade baseball wins two

The one-two punch of Westfield pitcher Leyton Pinckney and hitter Cole Brannen put Stratford on the ropes early on and the Eagles never could bounce back in a 7-1 Hornets’ win at home March 6.

Pinckney pitched three scoreless innings and kept Stratford hitters off balance, and Brannen followed suit on the offensive side by smashing two doubles.

Brannen collected his first double and came around to score on a wild pitch to start the scoring. He followed suit the very next inning with another double and scored another run on a Bryan Bledsoe double for a 3-1 lead. Tee Adams made it a 6-1 game in the fifth inning when he singled up the middle and later scored on a misplayed fly ball to center. Matthew McCrory closed out the scoring in the sixth inning when he walked and scored on a single by Connor Doles.

Both Pinckney and Brannen went 2-for-4 at the plate. Blake Holcomb pitched a scoreless final two innings in a relief role.

Adams proved to be a one-man wrecking machine in the Hornet’s second game of a double-header.

Adams was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in another baserunner to lead a 6-4 comeback in the final inning.

Adams and Austin Mathews each went 2-for-2.
