3-way tie in 2-4A softball

Just like last season, a crowd has gathered at the top of the GHSA Region 2-AAAA softball standings. Going into the final week of the regular season, three teams – Perry, Veterans and West Laurens – are in a tie for first place, all with one loss on their records.

Perry’s loss is to Veterans, while the Warhawks fell to West Laurens. The Raiders suffered a setback to defending champion Rutland High, but Rutland is in a tie for fifth place with Mary Persons, each with three losses. The Panthers and Veterans topped Rutland in their games.

West Laurens has Perry High at the Panther Pit on Tuesday. Veterans closes out region play with Baldwin.

Perry dismantled Rutland at home this past Tuesday 9-1 following a non-region road loss, 4-0, to Jones County High. The game with Rutland ended in five innings, the only run by the visiting team scoring in that fifth frame. Lorne Tucker’s offense had 12 hits, three by outfielder Sammy Gidney. She was the only player with multiple runs batted in. McKenzie Anderson made two hits while driving in one run. Amber Garrett doubled for an RBI. Sabrina Doucette was the winning pitcher with a four-hitter and six whiffs.

• Also this past Tuesday Veterans kept pace with a 4-1 victory in Forsyth against Mary Persons. Kaylee Albritton pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk. She also doubled at the plate with an RBI. Payton Stallworth had two hits, and Melissa Cox singled for an RBI.

Mary Persons had two baserunners thrown out trying to steal. One of those was Katie Gorman, who had two of her team’s four hits.

The Warhawks kept the momentum going Wednesday with a non-region road win 5-1 at Crisp County High. Albritton was in the pitcher’s circle again and struck out while allowing two hits.

Maggie Bell led Mitch Horton’s lineup with three hits. Lindsey Cauley batted home two runs.

• Northside High in Region 2-AAAAA, smashed Warner Robins Tuesday 15-5. The game went seven as it was 6-3 after five and 9-4 after six. Sarah Smith was dangerous in two ways as she drove home five runs on a single, double and home run. As a pitcher, she fanned six and scattered six hits.
