Veteran recieves donation of service from local business

Byron resident, Don Eiland, a veteran of the United States Air Force, had a problem: his roof was in need of repair. Though he has worked in construction and knows the construction business inside and out, Eiland said, he was unable to repair the issues himself due to disabilities. After seeking assistance in other places, Eiland said that he was put in contact with Cheryl Glover of Houston County Habitat for Humanity.

“[She] just seemed like she couldn’t do enough to find help for us, and in fact did,” Eiland praised.

Glover explained that Eiland called Habitat for Humanity to seek assistance with the roof, but because he lived outside of Houston County, which is the service area for the Houston County chapter, she was unable to take on the job. Glover also told that Eiland had sought help elsewhere but did not have the funds.

“I didn’t want to leave him hanging, because of the fact of how dire his situation was… I just heard the urgency in his voice,” Glover noted. She explained that at that time, there were a lot of storms, and Eiland had a lot of rain coming into his home. “He was really in a bad place,” Glover recalled, and further shared that as she started to reach out to other entities on Eiland’s behalf, she was also receiving the calls of outside entities asking Habitat for Humanity’s help for Eiland.

“I was like, ‘Wow, everybody’s coming to me.’ I was praying, ‘Lord, I really want to help this man.’ So I just put it on my personal social media page to see if someone would bite, and someone did,” Glover explained.

Advanced Roofing of Central Georgia, Glover said, was alerted to the post through social media and said that they would be interested in providing assistance, and were more than honored to be able to see what they could do to help the situation.

“We were so grateful that they were able to assist him, and I want to make sure that they get some recognition, because if it wasn’t for them, this wouldn’t have happened,” Glover expressed, saying that the company was laser focused and that they made it happen.

Advanced Roofing, located in Bonaire, replaced the entire roof free of charge, according to Glover and Eiland.

Jason Maloy of Advanced Roofing shared, “After we talked to [Eiland], we decided that we needed to move forward and try to help out, because we support the community, and we support our veterans and those that may be in need.” Maloy continued that the company did not want to merely do a patch job on the roof, as it could lead to problems in the future, so they decided to take the roof off, replace the rotten wood, and build a new one.

“They left the place tidy and clean, no mess, no nails, no nothing. It was remarkable.” Eiland further added that Advanced Roofing deserves the limelight, though they don’t do it for notoriety, and that the public should be made aware that they have someone they can trust. The entire process took around six hours, from start to finish, Eiland informed.

“We didn’t want this to drag on for days, so we just sent a large crew out there to make sure that we got in and out, as to not cause them any more aggravation than needed,” Maloy said of the time frame.

“Great work. No flaws on it at all, and they did a magnificent job,” Eiland said, and later shared that the company was gracious and very professional, and he can’t give them enough praise.

Eiland was very grateful for the service, Maloy pointed out, saying that they don’t ask for praise or recognition from anyone.

“I’ve been really blessed. I grew up here, and anytime I can pass along anything, big or small, I try to help,” Maloy professed, adding that he encourages businesses of any size, and anyone in the community that is able to help someone to do so, stating, “…It’s the right thing to do.”

“It’s a wonderful blessing… They’re the stars. I just thank God for them and pray that Jason’s company continues to grow and prosper,” Eiland said.

Glover also noted that there are further things that need repair inside of the home from rain damage due to the old roof. She asked that those who would like to provide assistance for this purpose please reach out to the Houston County Habitat for Humanity at (478) 328-3388.
