Shirley Hills Elementary School won first place in the
poster presenter competition at the 24th National Youth-At-Risk (NYAR)
Conference last week. More than 53 presenters from across the U. S. competed
for the award. Shirley Hills Elementary named its presentation, Response to Intervention-Road to
Independence (RtI) ~ A High Poverty-High Performing School’s Perspective.
The school won free registration for four to the NYAR Savannah 2014 Conference
or NYAR Las Vegas 2013 Conference.
Poster presentations provide an opportunity for interaction and consultation
with highly respected professionals with expertise in specific areas. The
sessions feature visuals and handouts.
“Rtl has made a difference for the students and faculty in our school,” said
Principal Jackson. “It works! Traditional assessments without feedback and
progress monitoring lead to the same disappointing results. Students need
strategies and interventions in place to be academically successful. At Shirley
Hills Elementary our success with Response to Intervention can be seen in our
year-to-year progress. We are not there yet, but we know progress monitoring,
researched based interventions, measuring results and having high expectations
guarantee a brighter future for every student who walks through our doors.”
Presenter topics for the NYAR competition were in the following categories:
- Academic Achievement and School Leadership (closing the
achievement gaps and promoting learning for all students);
- Social and Emotional Skills (fostering social and emotional
skills of all children and youth and enhancing the social climate);
- Safety and Violence Prevention (preventing violence and
ensuring safety for all children and youth);
- Mental and Physical Health (promoting the mental and
physical health of all children and youth); and
- Family and Community (developing and enhancing family and
community support for all children and youth).
The mission of the conference is to train adults who serve youth to create safe,
healthy, caring and intellectually empowering educational environments that
foster the well-being of children and adolescents. To accomplish this mission,
over 100 presentations are offered by nationally and internationally recognized
presenters to more than 1,200 conference participants from across the country.
Shirley Hills Elementary is also a past NYAR High Flying School-Honorable
Mention.
