Selling affordable dresses

“Anybody can come

here and shop.” Barbara Hilliard

When a girl finally finds the dress that would be perfect for

the dance, her eyes light up and a broad smile crosses her face.

That was the ending of several stories told by the Warner

Robins High school council members while they were standing outside the closet

that houses more than 200 dresses.

The dresses that will be on sale on Jan. 26 from 12 to 4 p.m.

in the Rockin’ R Café range from short Homecoming or Valentine’s Day dresses to

prom or pageant dresses and even a wedding dress or two. All of them are under

$50, said Barbara Hilliard, the student council adviser who said they accept

cash and checks but not credit or debit cards.

A lot of work goes into to preparing for the sale, said Katie

Martin.

Martin explained that the students pick up the dresses that

were brought to the front office, dry clean them – which is a service donated

by Strato – and determine their size.

Some of the dresses still have their original tags, said

Hilliard, but some have been altered. Hilliard said the alterations sometimes

make it difficult to tell the size, but they eventually find the right one.

“Seeing their faces when they try it on … it’s heartwarming,”

explained Ashley McKinney about her favorite part of the sale, which is when

the girls try on the perfect dress for them.

Stories of a bride finding a set of bridesmaid’s dresses for

around $100, and girls of all ages who could not afford an expensive dress to

the dance finding one that fit them perfectly were told as the group of school

council students and Hilliard stood outside the closet that is packed with

dresses.

Hilliard said the one thing she wanted everyone to know was,

“Anybody can come here and shop.”
