Perry looks at electric vehicle charge stations

The City of Perry’s council members held a lengthy discussion Monday at their pre-council session about the possibility of some businesses around town having charging stations for electric vehicles.

According to Mary Beth Bass, the city’s economic development director, around 100 charging stations are available to the middle Georgia region through the Middle Georgia Clean Air Coalition. The stations can be installed in public locations and businesses.

The charging stations are free due to ECOtality’s Electric Vehicles Project, which has a goal of installing charging stations in nine states, but businesses would have to pay to have the stations installed. The cost on instillation ranges from $2,000 to $6,000.

Bass told council that several businesses in town are interested in the project, but Lumpkin Shell, located on Swift Street, showed the most interest and requested to be a site of a charging station.

Other businesses that have expressed interest include Kroger, Wal-Mart, Crackle Barrel, Publix, Walgreens, CVS and the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. Most of the larger chain businesses have to receive corporate approval before they are allowed to proceed, according to documents provided during the council meeting.

No action was taken on the charging stations because council decided to further discuss the project during its work session, which was held Tuesday.
