Perry Junior League clubs heading for state tourney

Perry Junior League is sending two baseball clubs to the Dixie Youth state tournament, which takes place July 6 in Ft. Oglethorpe.

District 3 competition concluded last weekend in Macon, and the 8 & under All-Stars from Perry returned home as Coach Pitch Champions.

On Saturday, Perry Junior League defeated Baldwin County 18-8.

On Tuesday, Perry Junior League defeated Crawford County 14-2.

On Thursday, Perry Junior League defeated Lamar County after going into extra innings. The game was tied 10-10. Perry went on to defeat Lamar 17-13.

That set up the first finals, and Perry defeated West Macon 14-2 on Friday. The rematch was Saturday, and Perry won again 15-7.

The team scored 99 runs in 30 innings and gave up only 37.

The 12 & under baseball Ozone All-Stars began the District 3 tournament at West Macon Park on June 15 against the Crawford County Allstars. Perry won 13-1 with Andrew Newhouse pitching three scoreless innings and Travis McDonald pitching one inning in relief giving up only one run in the score shortened game.

Monday’s play was cancelled due to rain and storms.

In Tuesday’s play, Perry Junior League defeated Jones County 12-3. Justin Eckman hit a towering home run over the scoreboard to power the offensive attack. Tanner Bowden, Lane Rucker and Justin Eckman limited Jones to three runs over six innings.

Wednesday’s play again cancelled due to thunderstorms and rain.

On Thursday, Perry Junior League was defeated by Baldwin County 5-4 in extra innings. Justin Eckman blasted a two-run home run. The game ended on a close play at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.

On Friday, it was a repeat of Tuesday as Perry went against Jones County again and eliminated it from the tournament by a score of 11-8. Rucker, Newhouse and Bowden pitched for Perry

Saturday’s championship pitted Perry Junior League against Baldwin for second time with Perry needing to take the first game to force a second and decisive game. Perry came up short 11-9. Game was highlighted by Bryceton Nobles’ three-run homer.

For the tournament Perry outscored its opponents 49-28.

Newhouse was 12-for-15 for the tournament with six doubles and six singles.
