Moultrie man found guilty of trafficking cocaine

Earlier today, a Houston County Jury found Marcus Jerome Anderson, 38, of Moultrie, Georgia, guilty of Trafficking in Cocaine in excess of 200 grams.  The trial began on Monday, January 14, 2013 with jury selection and the evidence was presented over the next two days. The jury deliberated for almost four hours before reaching its verdict.

The case resulted from a traffic stop made by the Houston County Sheriff’s Office on August 11, 2008.  Deputy Clay Chambers pulled the vehicle over for an improper tag display, received consent to search from the driver and eventually found a large amount cocaine concealed in the female driver’s purse.  Marcus Anderson had been left alone in the vehicle while Deputy Chambers was discussing the traffic offense with the driver.

The defendants tale to law enforcement was that they were dropping off the driver’s niece in Byron and picking up a Hanna Montana doll for the driver’s granddaughter.  The driver later gave statements to members of the District Attorney’s Office that this story about the niece was untrue and that the driver’s sister had passed the drugs to Marcus Anderson in Byron.

Sentencing is set for tomorrow at 10:30 AM in Superior Court of Houston County. Judge Katherine Lumsden presided over the 3-day trial and will impose sentence tomorrow. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Daryl Manns and Kirby Wincey.
