McMichael to chair new CGTC board

With the official merger date of July 1 quickly approaching, members of the Middle Georgia Technical College and Central Georgia Technical College boards of directors held a joint meeting at the Macon campus Wednesday to appoint officers for the new Central Georgia Technical College board of directors.


Tom McMichael, retired banker and Houston County commissioner, was nominated as the first chairman for the board of directors for the new Central Georgia Technical College. Sarah Hawthorne, president and founder of AlphaSkills and retired educator, was nominated to serve as the vice chair for the board of the consolidated college.


Both nominations passed unanimously with McMichael and Hawthorne abstaining on their respective nominations. In addition the new officers, members of both boards will now come together to form the board of directors for the new Central Georgia Technical College.


Board members will be Karen Bailey, director for Hawkinsville Better Hometown; Rodney Brannen, co-owner of Brannen NeSmith Funeral Homes in Vienna and Unadilla; Marsha Buzzell, executive director of the Warner Robins Convention and Visitors Bureau; Danny Carpenter, retired superintendent for the Houston County Board of Education; David Danzie, vice president of Business Services for BB&T Bank; Dr. Vernard Hodges, owner of Critter Fixer Veterinary Hospital; Robert Landau, attorney and partner at Landau Associates; Michael O’Hara, former director of civilian personnel at Robins Air Force Base and current senior executive director of human resources for Houston Healthcare; Tommy Stalnaker, chairman of the Houston County Commissioners; Dorothy Walker, owner of Gray Drugs; Robby Whitehead, owner of Specialty Power Windows in Forsyth; and Stephen Williams, president and CEO of Reliable Global Systems in Warner Robins.


The CGTC Board of Directors is a group of community and business leaders from each of the eleven counties in the College’s service area, including Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Dooly, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, and Twiggs. This group, known as the Local Board, assists CGTC’s governing board, the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia.


In addition to reviewing and approving the local policies, procedures, and educational programs of the College, the local directors also serve as advocates for Central Georgia Technical College.
