Locals claim state horseshoe doubles patches
The 2013 Georgia Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association held the state doubles tournament June 1 in Hull with 54 pitchers going for a state doubles champion patch.
In Class A, there was a battle for the second spot (the top two in each class advanced to the championship class). It looked like Kevin Thomas and Bo Mullis from the Perry Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club would cruise into the finals, but a late loss tied them with George Schmidt and Jackie Gore from Warner Robins with one game to go. Thomas and Mullis needed a win to avoid a four-way tie, and they beat Ronnie Miller and Doug DeFoe to snatch sole possession of No. 2 at 4-2 (55 ringers out of 240 shoes).
With just two games to go in Class B, there were five teams tied for first place. Jack Lester and D.J. Mullis of Perry, Roland Lallier and Adam Hogan of Warner Robins and Jimmy Coile and Tony Bennett all ended up in the final tie after the last game. Lallier and Hogan had the highest ringer percentage (27.86), so they had the bye in the playoff and a guaranteed spot in the championship class.
Colie and Bennett wound up winning the class by beating Lester and Mullis and then edging Lallier and Hogan by two points.
Class C also had a playoff to determine the winner. Chuck Poole and Taylor Colie of Perry faced Marcus Waters and Regina Bonner of Cordele after both teams lost just once. Behind a strong showing by Colie, her team went on to win with a 6-1 record and 73 ringers in 280 shoes.
Class D ended up tied as well with Larry Myers and Maiyah Goolsby of Perry facing David Edge and David Colie. Myers and Goolsby fell to this pair earlier in the tournament by two points, but came back for the top seed with a final 5-1 record and 85 ringers out of 240 shoes.
They weren’t done, however, as Myers and Goolsby went undefeated in the championship class at 7-0 with 96 ringers in 280 shoes. Poole and Colie were also dominant, losing only one time to the first place winners for an overall 6-1 mark with 73 ringers out of 280 shoes.
