Lake Joy Primary School music teacher Faye Boyer is one of

217 quarterfinalists nominated for the Music Educator Award presented by The

Recording Academy and GRAMMY Foundation. More than 30,000 nominations were

submitted from all 50 states in the U.S.

The Music Educator Award was established to recognize K –

college educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to music

education. Anyone could nominate a teacher, and those nominated were then

invited to complete an application.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wheeless, 17 and now a senior in Taylor

County, nominated Boyer. “Mrs. Boyer never gave up on me,” said Elizabeth.

“I auditioned for band only to find out that I have no rhythm! It didn’t matter

to her. She is a great teacher who will never give up on any student!”

Boyer commented, “Music is about learning more than just

singing and playing. Elizabeth plans to become a sound technician and recently

worked with The Dukes of Hazard Reunion and The Peach Festival. I am so proud

of her!”

About the award Boyer said, “I am humbled by the nomination.

To be considered by a teenage, former student not only validates music

education, but reminds us all of the value of a teacher. We have a unique, but

very brief opportunity to positively impact the lives of students. I love what

I do every day!”

One music educator will be selected from 10 finalists to be

recognized for her remarkable impact on students’ lives. Semifinalists will be

announced in August; the winner will be announced on Jan. 26, 2014, during the

GRAMMY Awards telecast. The winner will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the

GRAMMY Awards ceremony, accept the award and receive a $10,000 honorarium. The

nine finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10

finalists will also receive matching grants.

Music Educator Award quarter-finalists are asked to create

three short videos or essays about their classroom teaching, lives impacted and

a music classroom wish list. Boyer is currently preparing materials about her

contributions as a music teacher to submit by June 11, 2013, on these topics:

·      most important teaching

philosophies;

·      proudest moments as a teacher;

·      most significant challenges and how

addressed;

·      personal vision for great music

education and how its implemented with students;

·      how a measurable

difference has been made in the lives of students;

·      significant impact on school and

community; and

·      significant and lasting

contributions to the field of music education.

The honorariums and grants provided to the finalists and

schools are made possible by the support of the GRAMMY Foundation’s Education

Champions Converse, Ford Motor Company Fund, General Mills Box Tops For

Education and Journeys.
