Nineteen bright-eyed young ladies competed in the Miss Northside Pageant Friday in hopes to win the prized crown. Junior Laura Dominey was the lucky lady who was crowned Miss Northside High School 2013 in her first pageant ever.
This year the pageant theme, which was presented by the NHS Thespian Troup 2982, was “Back to the Future.”
From the start of the program the energy was high in the Ray Horn Theatre. Each of the 19 contestants had a smile on their face. Contestants dazzled the audience and judges in the talent competition. There was singing, riffle twirling, dancing (tap, praise, lyrical, ballet), monologues, and one contestant played the guitar. Contestants also competed in the formal wear competition and the informal wear competition, where each contestant wore outfits that represented different decades.
This year the 51st Ms. NHS 2013 winner was junior Laura Dominey. First runner up was senior Brianna Roberson. Second runner up was sophomore Michaela Heide.
Third runner up was junior Taylor McClendon. Fourth runner up was freshmen Melanie Wood.
The pageant celebrated 50 years of tradition and many of the former 50 Miss Northside pageant winners were present. All the former winners took the stage to be recognized.
In attendance was the very first Miss NHS, Brenda Smith who was crowned in 1963.
“It is amazing NHS could get all of the past winners together for this years pageant,” stated Smith.
Her handmade dress that she wore when she won the title in 1963 was on display in the theatre lobby. The dress was stunning and had an 18-inch waist.
Olivia McMillian (Miss NHS 2012) and Smith helped crown Dominey at the end of the night.
“I’ve never felt so honored,” said Dominey.
