Houston Commissioners approve Lake Joy Road widening project

The Houston County Board of Commissioners approved a design contract for the widening of about four miles of Lake Joy Road Tuesday. It will be a while, though, before motorists can travel with ease.

Chairman Tommy Stalnaker said due to the large number of residences along the road, the design would take about 18 months to complete, and then construction could take another two years.

The project is to widen the road from two lanes to three with a turn lane. It will be done in two phases from south of Sandefur Road to Houston Lake Road. The contract of $461,039 is through R.K. Shah and Associates of Duluth. Stalnaker said the project is funded by the 2012 special purpose local option sales tax.

“This will improve the traffic flow on Lake Joy greatly,” said Stalnaker. “That center turn lane will enhance the safety of property owners trying to get in and out of their property.”

In other business, the Commissioners adopted a resolution to support the education special purpose local option sales tax (E-SPLOST) to be voted on March 1. Commissioner Tom McMichael said it is important for the citizens to get out and vote and to keep Houston County’s as the best school system.

Ending the meeting, commissioners McMichael, Larry Thomson and Gail Robinson all announced they are seeking re-election this year for another term.
