Houston Co. Young Farmers Goat Show
By Kelley Lavender and Will Whitehead
Mossy Creek Middle School hosted the first Houston County Young Farmer Goat show. The event was sponsored and ran by the Houston County Young Farmers Association.
The HCYF is an adult education arm of agriculture education in Georgia. The Houston County Young Farmers sponsor youth livestock events for students in Houston County and all over the state. The money for sponsoring youth events by the HCYF is raised each year at the “Chop Shop” vendor booth at the Georgia National Fair in October. All proceeds from the “Chop Shop” are used to promote agriculture to the youth of Houston County and our state. The “Chop Shop” is located just north of the clock tower in front of the Cattle Barn at the Fairgrounds.
The show had 25 goats entered and the students competed in showmanship and conformation classes. The show was judged by Steve Morgan of Harris County Extension Services.
Morgan was complementary of the quality of goat and of the kids involved in the show. Students from Northside High School, Mossy Creek Middle School, Kings Chapel Elementary School, Perdue Elementary School, and Fullington Academy had goats in the show. The goal of the local goat show is to promote the Junior Goat program in the region as well as allow Houston County students the opportunity to exhibit their livestock at a local event.
Showmanship winners were Cason Gentry and Abbie Rainwater of Houston County 4-H in the elementary age groups.
Keyonta Jordan and Kera Kelly from Northside FFA won the High School age groups. Showmanship winners received a plaque and cash prize. The doe show had many quality exhibits.
The doe goats are required to weigh at least 35 lbs. and have to be born on or after Jan. 1 of the year of the show. Cason Gentry owns the Champion Doe named and Alaini Moore exhibited the Reserve Champion Doe.
The wether show was also very competitive with many strong entries. Abbie Rainwater was named the Reserve Champion Goat while Cason Gentry exhibited the Champion Wether.
