Hornet 7th-grade hoopsters take 1st place

Leyton Pinckney made a name for himself as a home-run hitter

for Warner Robins American Little League baseball.

Chip Champion sees a bright future for Pinckney on the

basketball court as well.

Pinckney’s two free throws in the final 10 seconds of

regulation gave Champion’s seventh-grade basketball team at Westfield the

finals victory in the tournament for the GISA’s Middle Georgia schools

Thursday. Westfield defeated Tattnall Square, the host team in Macon, 43-42.

Pinckney scored 18 points overall, and Logan Fink had 13. {{more}}

Champion described the game as tight and back and forth.

Westfield led at halftime 20-19 and built its advantage as much as six in the

second half. Tattnall Square, though, mounted its comeback and scored a

3-pointer to lead by two.

When the Hornets trailed by one, there were 10 seconds

remaining and the basketball got into Pinckney’s hands. He drew afoul with

four seconds to go and made both shots for his team to claim the first-place

trophy.

Other members of the team are Wyatt Young (five points), Tee

Adams (four points), Adam Parker (two points), Robbie Luzzi, Foy Evans and

Tanner Rowburrey.
