Playing
away from the Bear Den for the fourth time in a row, Houston County High’s boys
basketball team left Macon Tuesday with a win, 55-47, against the First
Presbyterian Day Vikings.
“It
honestly came down to the way we defended in the second half,” said head coach
Stephen Walls. “We gave up 29 in the first half and 18 in the second half. FPD
is a really good team. They have two really good guards who are hard to contain
and a big man who really gave us problems inside early in the second half.”
Andrew
Graham paced the Bears with 28 points, and Davon Akins had 14 points.
PERRY
Marquise
Williams, a forward for Baldwin High, registered a double-double Tuesday as the
Braves stopped Perry High’s three-game winning streak in a 60-51 final in
Milledgeville. Williams was 7-for-9 shooting the basketball from the floor and
made nine out of 10 foul shots to score 23 points. He also grabbed 16 rebounds.
The
Panthers were down by one, 23-22, at the half, but Baldwin steadily built up
its advantage in the second. It was the first loss against two wins in Region
2-AAAA for Perry, who have one more league contest with Westside before the
Christmas break.
The Perry High girls also lost at Baldwin 56-46
Tuesday. Leading scorer for the Lady Panthers was Aaliyah Cheatham with 16.
Courtney Winston led all rebounders with nine.
“We could not sustain consistent defensive effort
which allowed the Bravettes to run up and down the court on us,” said head
coach Jeff Winston.
VETERANS
A 1-0 start in Region 2-AAAA quickly slipped to a
1-2 mark for the Veterans High girls basketball team. Making a second trip in a
row to Macon (where the Lady Warhawks lost in overtime to Westside Friday),
Nicole Miranda’s girls fell to Howard High 51-48.
“We
played great in spurts, but got down by 13,” said Miranda. “We stormed back and
cut it to one, but a bad quarter really hurt us. I was proud of our effort to
get back in the game on the road. Howard is a strong team and we had
opportunities to tie or win down the stretch and couldn’t convert.”
Kerregan
Poe-Cochran played exceptional offensively (23 points and three assists), but
our post game didn’t get it done.”
Courtney Palmer added eight points.
Veterans’
boys basketball team was able to take the 0 off the win column in 2-AAAA in the
third try Tuesday. In defeating the Howard Huskies 64-55 on the road, head
coach Chris Kothe got 22 points from guard Jonathan Robertson.
“The
Broughton brothers (Malik and Cortez) played well inside,” said Kothe.
“Dominique Crittenden was a big spark in the second half.”
Veterans needed the win after opening region play with a home loss to
Rutland and falling on Dec. 7 in Macon to Westside 68-59.
“We dug
ourselves another 20-point deficit,” said Kothe, referring to what happened in
the Rutland game also. “We fought back, but could not close game out. We
missed 14 free throws.”
Robertson scored 20 points and Malik Broughton nine.
