From staff reports
Just like with the girls, the boys basketball teams of
Region 2-AAAAA’s B sub-region had to do coin tosses to determine the top three
seeds of next week’s tournament at Jones County High.
Amazingly, the Jones Greyhounds won a second straight
triple-overtime game as part of an overall six-game winning streak. First, it
was Northside High going to Gray and falling after 12 extra minutes to finish
the regular season at 4-2 in the sub-region.
Warner Robins High needed to beat Jones County at home
Tuesday to win the sub-region outright at 5-1. But, it was the Hounds avenging
a loss on their floor to the Demons by prevailing in triple-OT 72-68.
So it’s Warner Robins, Northside and Jones that had to do
the coin tosses, all with that 4-2 sub-region mark and splits against each
other.
The leading scorer
for the Demons was Nathan Curtis with 20 points. Carlos Scott scored 13.
“We had two chances
to win, one in regulation with a missed free throw and one in the first overtime
with an open look from about eight feet,” said assistant coach Mike Martin. The
Demons finished the regular season 11-11.
Also on Tuesday,
Warner Robins High’s girls basketball team needed to beat Jones County at home
to be a part of a three-way tie with Northside and Houston County at 4-2. Tom
Mobley’s group got that victory 44-33.
Asha Stegall had 11
points, Ce Ce Carroll eight and Destini Johnson seven. The Demonettes are 13-11
overall heading into tournament play.
WESTFIELD
The crucial series
of home basketball games at the conclusion of the regular season for the
Westfield Lady Hornets got off to a good start Tuesday.
Valerie McLure made
4-of-5 from the free-throw line in the closing minutes against Mt. de Sales to
seal a 64-62 win. That gave Westfield a split in the GISA Region 2-AAA
head-to-head with the Lady Cavaliers and a 3-2 overall record in the league.
For only the second
time all season, the Lady Hornets trailed a game at the half. It was 33-27 for
Mt. de Sales at the break, but in the third quarter Katlyn Moseley erupted for
10 of her 12 points in the third quarter. In all, it was a 21-point output for
Westfield and a 48-43 lead.
Callie Hammerle, one
of Cass Cassell’s leading scorers on the night with 17 points, had half of
Westfield’s total (16) in the final period. McLure also had 17 with six
rebounds. While only registering two points, Sydney Ledford pulled down nine
boards.
The Hornet boys
basketball team had just three points in the final 10 minutes of regulation
Tuesday and fell to the Mt. de Sales Cavs 59-45.
Jake Walls, head
coach, said the game went back and forth, and in fact his club was ahead by
one, 42-41, going into the final quarter. MDS went on a 23-3 run to finish the
game.
James Beeland made
three 3-pointers for 13 points, and freshman Giles Amos recorded a
double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cam Forrester added 10 points and
Micah Moore nine.
The free-throw
difference was 23 attempts for the Cavs to four for Westfield.
VETERANS
The Warhawks of
Veterans High went to 7-6 in Region 2-AAAA with a fifth straight win, 74-61, at
Mary Persons High Tuesday. Jonathan Robertson reached the 20-point mark again,
and Bryan Hollis added 14.
Minus forward Jalyn
Slaughter, it was a rough night for the Veterans girls at Mary Persons, who won
53-34. The home team was 20-for-28 at the foul line while Veterans was 4-for-6.
