Hero awarded Purple Heart
Gen. Michael Hostage III, Air Combat Command commander, pins
the Purple Heart medal on Tech. Sgt. Barry Duffield of the 116th Air
Control Wing during the ceremony held Monday at Robins Air Force Base.
Duffield, who is an explosive ordinance disposal technician, was deployed to
Afghanistan in 2011. During this deployment he sustained injures from an
Improvised Explosive Device that was placed under a road. The release from the
base states, “the violent motion of the blast caused head pain and several
injuries to areas of his body.” Duffield also earned the Air Force Combat
Action Medal and the Bronze Star during the same deployment.
