Fatal street race kills one, leaves two others seriously injured in crash

On April 21, 2013 at approximately 2:11 am, the Houston County 911 Center received a call in regards to a vehicle crash.  The crash was found to be on Duke Road near the intersection of Toomer Road.  

Once on scene, it was found that 3 people were in the vehicle that crashed, a 2010 Ford Mustang GT.   The driver was identified as 44 year old Danny Ray Wheeler of 594 Toomer Road Perry, GA.  Mr. Wheeler was seriously injured and had to be flown by Helicopter from the scene to the Macon Medical Center.  He is facing felony charges and several traffic offenses.   Alcohol is considered to be a contributing factor. 

The back seat passenger, 26 year old Michael Spence, was also transported Macon Medical Center.  He is listed in stable condition. The front seat passenger, 17 year old Colten Joseph Winkler of Perry, Ga, was killed as a result of the crash. 

The investigation has found that a party was going on at the Wheeler address, just down the street from the crash location. Around 2 am, several of the people at the party gathered up and traveled to Duke Road.  It was there that the Ford Mustang and another vehicle started racing on Duke Road.  Both vehicles reached a high speeds and the driver of the Ford Mustang lost control of the vehicle.   The Mustang traveled several hundred feet on the shoulder of the roadway and  into a fence.  The Mustang continued into a large 30-40 foot tree.
