Man charged with murder of retired Perry Fairgrounds security guard

APPLING COUNTY, Ga. – A former Perry Fairgrounds security guard was killed on Sunday, Nov. 19 in Baxley.

According to Appling County Sheriff Mark Melton, officers were dispatched at approximately 1:14 p.m. to 1196 Henry Griffin Road in response to a shooting. Jonathan Hayes, 72, was found dead from a gunshot wound when law enforcement arrived on scene.

Baxley native Steven Lee, 37, was taken into custody a short distance away from the scene. According to the press release, Lee is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a crime.

The National Fairgrounds shared they were heartbroken about Hayes’ passing.

“We are saddened to hear the news of [Hayes’] passing and we offer the deepest condolences to his family,” said representatives from the fairgrounds.
