Veterans senior Lowder signs with Fort Valley State U.

Veterans High School (Kathleen, Georgia) senior tight end Jaylen Lowder signed a letter-of-intent with the Fort Valley State University Wildcats last week.

“I made the decision because Fort Valley State University has everything I wanted in a school and in a football program,” says Lowder. “It’s close to home; my heart was set on going to a Historically Black College and University and they offered the major I was interested in pursuing.”

Lowder’s father, Jammy [pronounced Jay-mee] Lowder, is currently deployed with the United States Air Force but has been there every step of the way, along with his wife, T.J. Lowder, for Jaylen during his decision.

“It’s just a blessing for Fort Valley State University to be giving Jaylen an opportunity,” says Jammy via text. “He has done everything the right way, been very disciplined, gotten good grades and displayed excellent character traits. He’s been an ideal son and wonderful teammate.”

Lowder choosing to play close to home will make it easier for his parents and family to see him continue his football career.

“I prayed a lot,” says Lowder, “and talked to my parents about the decision. I wanted them to be able to continue to see me play.” He added, “This process has been a rollercoaster ride and I am relieved it’s over. Now I can focus on finishing school and the region tournament this week.”

Veterans High School football coach David Bruce, who coached Lowder for his entire career, says, “Jaylen has been a good leader and player for us. We will miss his leadership and great attitude.”

Lowder was a three-year starter at tight end and fullback for the Warhawks. “He set a great example for the younger players,” adds Bruce.

Lowder and the Warhawks will play their opening game of the basketball AAAAA-region 1 region playoffs on Friday against No. 2 seed Harris County High School at 5:30 p.m. at host site Warner Robins High School.

Fort Valley State head football coach Kevin Porter and his staff, despite coming off of a league championship, are still working on building the depth of the team with this year’s strong recruiting class.

“This class is going to put Fort Valley State on the map even more,” says Lowder.

“I’m extremely proud of him and can’t wait to get home to celebrate this accomplishment with him,” says Jammy.
