Brown blanks Stratford; VH blasts BravesFrom Staff Reports
Garrett Brown, one week after a no-hit pitching performance against Mt. de Sales in a GISA Region 2-AAA home game, took the mound at Stratford Academy in Macon and turned in another complete-game masterpiece for Westfield coach Rob Fitzpatrick.
Though it was neither a no-hitter nor a shutout, Brown held down the Eagles over seven innings with one run allowed on seven hits. He threw 88 pitches to record eight strikeouts. Final score: Hornets 4, Stratford 1 to improve Fitzpatrick’s club to 3-0 in region play (the sixth straight win overall).
Westfield never trailed as the score was 2-1 in the visiting team’s favor after two innings. Brown was also able to pitch around five errors, four of which put Stratford runners on base. His defense did turned three double plays.
From the plate, both Evan Williams and Dustin Hall – seniors – had a double and single. Williams drove in one run, and Gehrig Broxton singled for an RBI.
VETERANS
Backed by a home run and single for four RBI from Kyle King, the Veterans Warhawks blasted Baldwin High 12-2 in five innings at home Friday.
Micah Wells also contributed big to the 10-hit Veterans attack with a double, single and three runs batted in.
Kyle Dempsey and Zane Conlon each had two hits. Conlon also produced a run via a sacrifice fly.
Veterans coach David Coffey used Brett Decker and Ryan Johnson on the pitching mound. Decker worked three innings as the starter and recorded seven strikeouts.
The Warhawks are winners of six straight games going into the week – four of the victories in Region 2-AAAA.
PERRY
The Panthers dropped a second straight 2-AAAA contest Friday in Macon. Howard High ripped out 12 hits to hand Perry a 5-1 setback.
Out of the five Panther hits, Drew Martens – freshman outfielder – had two.
Perry is looking to reschedule a rained out 2-AAAA game from March 19 at Baldwin High in Milledgeville.
NS-WR
Concerns over pending inclement weather conditions for this past weekend forced three high school teams in Warner Robins to alter their schedules.
Warner Robins High moved its scheduled rivalry meeting with Northside High back one day from Friday to Thursday. In what was the third game in a row in as many days for both clubs, the Eagles got seven shutout innings from Brent Sappe to defeat the Demons 6-0.
Even with a six-run margin, the overall hits advantage by Northside was only one (5 to 4). The game was scoreless going into the fifth inning.
Derek Byrne and Ethan Broome then both drove in two Eagle runs. Sappe finished with five strikeouts.
Warner Robins’ Jarrod Crum pitched seven full innings. Two of the Demon hits were from A.J. Priaulx.
One other Region 2-AAAAA game scheduled for Friday, Houston County High hosting Jones County, was moved to April 11.
