Special to the Journal
Brittany Joiner-Lucas has recently been selected
to serve as the director for Middle Georgia Technical College’s (MGTC)
operations at the Sam A. Way, Sr. Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center.
Her appointment becomes effective Monday, March 11.
Lucas is currently working with MGTC as an
Instructional Coordinator for the Career Pathways and Accelerating
Opportunities (AO) programs, both initiatives for MGTC’s Adult Education
department. Lucas helped lead the development and implementation of the AO
program, an innovative program that allows General Educational Development
(GED®) students to enroll simultaneously in college courses while pursuing
their GED®. MGTC was the first technical college in Georgia to offer this type
of program to its students.
In her new role, she will serve as a liaison
between the College and the Hawkinsville-Pulaski County community. As the
Center’s director, Lucas will be responsible for ensuring that the
post-secondary educational needs in the Pulaski County community are met and that
the Pulaski County’s interests are represented to the College. MGTC offers
credit instruction in various program areas at the Hawkinsville Center, as well
as Adult Education classes for students pursuing a GED®. Additionally, Lucas
will assist with MGTC’s focus on economic development initiatives in Pulaski
County.
“I am very eager to be a part of the
Hawkinsville community and be a representative for MGTC,” said Lucas.
“I have worked in education for almost a decade and I fully believe that
this opportunity will allow me to become part of a thriving community and
continue the work of developing a viable workforce for this part of the
College’s service area.”
Following her undergraduate career, Lucas taught
at the secondary level and then moved in to higher education at MGTC as the
Health Literacy Instructor in 2007. In 2009, she became the Lead Adult
Education instructor in Pulaski County. She returned to the main campus
in Warner Robins in 2011 to take on her current role.
“Brittany is well-respected as a high-energy
and knowledgeable leader among her peers,” said Dr. Joan Thompson, vice
president of Satellite Operations-South for MGTC. “Her familiarity with
credit instruction, adult education, continuing education, and economic
development will be a tremendous asset to the Pulaski County community as she
serves in this role for MGTC.”
Lucas is a graduate of Wesleyan College and holds
a Bachelor of Arts in Middle Grades Education. Additionally, she earned a
Master of Education and holds a secondary reading endorsement from Georgia
College and State University. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate of
Philosophy in Adult Education with a concentration in Educational Leadership
from the University of Georgia.
She is married to Luther Lucas, a high school history
teacher in Houston County. They reside in Bleckley County and attend First
Baptist Church in Cochran.
The administrative consolidation process is
currently underway for MGTC to merge with Central Georgia Technical College
(CGTC) in Macon. As of July 1, 2013, MGTC’s main campus, as well as the
Hawkinsville Center, will be part of the NEW Central Georgia Technical College.
The merger of the two colleges will allow students access to more program
options and will create one of the largest two-year colleges in Georgia.
