Bonaire MS student 2nd in design contest

Bonaire Middle School’s Lily Schocker won second place in the statewide Design Contest for Manufacturing Appreciation Week.

Lily was honored at an Industry Appreciation Reception, which recognized Houston County’s manufacturing companies. The reception was held April 18 at the Go Fish Education Center in Perry by the Houston County Development Authority (HCDA).

The statewide winners were also recognized at the Governor’s Awards Luncheon in Atlanta where Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle presented each with their award. As a state second-place winner, Lily qualified for a certificate and $300.

Manufacturing Appreciation Week is held annually to recognize the contribution of manufacturing to Georgia’s economy.

An important part of this event is the Student Design Competition, which involves young people in the celebration and teaches them about manufacturing.

Middle Georgia Technical College worked with school systems within their service area to promote the competition, resulting in 176 local entries.  The contest is open to all students in all grades who compete at one of three levels – elementary, middle or high.

The goal of the competition is to inspire children to research manufacturing and to learn that careers range from assembly line work to jobs for engineers, scientists, marketers and more.
