Somehow, someway, when the early-evening rains finally blew away Tuesday, Houston County High and Veterans High found an opening to start a big non-region baseball game.It turned out to be all about offense, the host Bears winning 13-12 despite Veterans scoring five unanswered in the last two innings.
In an innocent enough beginning, Houston County led 1-0 after one complete. That advantage went to 4-2 at the end of the second frame. The Warhawks were ahead after the third inning 7-4. The Bears tied the game 7-7 through four and scored six in the bottom of the fifth (13-7).
Veterans, in scoring the last five, had a four-run seventh but could not push across a tying run.
Each team had 12 hits, and there were nine total errors committed. A combined number of seven pitchers took the mound.
The most hits belonged to Houston’s Justin Jones with three. He hit a home run, doubled and drove in two runs.
Dalton Carriker and Josh Profit of the Bears each had two hits. Profit drove in four runs. Hunt Smith got credit for two RBI.
For Veterans, Zack Wilkes had three RBI and one double. Zane Conlon batted home two runs. He doubled, as did teammates Kal Dempsey, Micah Wells and Harley Hunt.
