From Staff Reports
Houston County High School was slated to begin baseball games on Feb. 19. Well over a week later, it was finally time for the Bears to ‘play ball!’
There are as many make-up dates to announce as highlights to report from the Houston County 2013 season. The Bears are hosting Perry High on March 20 and then hitting the road March 25 to face Peach County High and April 3 for a showdown at Veterans High. All of these games, due to the inclement weather of February, were called off on their originally scheduled times.
On Friday, March 1, head coach Jason Brett was able to fill out a lineup card, and it must have been a good one.
At Perry High, Houston County scored 11 first-inning runs and went on to end the game in four innings 17-2. The Bears had 14 hits and received one-hit pitching from Jordan McIlwain, who threw all four innings.
Hunt Smith and David Umphreyville each had three hits. Smith doubled and drove in two runs while Umphreyville also doubled. Blake Jackson had two hits – one a double – and three RBI. Dalton Carriker drove in four runs while Hunter Phillips doubled and brought in two.
Perry’s Dillon Hendrix accounted for both Panther runs on a home run.
On Saturday, March 2, Brett and the Bears went to the Atlanta area to make up more games called off from Feb. 23.
The big match-up was against Harrison High, and Hunter Jackson tossed a complete-game one-hitter 4-0. He struck out three.
Smith doubled his RBI total to four on two hits. B. Jackson and Umphreyville each brought in a run.
Houston’s other game Saturday was a slugfest, and the Bears were on the short end of a 13-9 final against North Cobb. North Cobb had the advantage in hits as well, 15 to 10, and led the game 11-3 after three innings.
The Bears scored five in a row, but could pull no closer. B. Jackson had a double and two singles for two RBI, Umphreyville brought in two and Mark Lumsden doubled with an RBI.
