Perry PD hosting records restriction this weekend

PERRY, Ga. — Perry Police Department is bringing back a community event, meant to give the public a fresh start if they have had a run-in with law enforcement. Saturday, the police department will host a records restriction event at the Perry Events Center.

Representatives from Centerville Police Department, Warner Robins Police Department, Houston County Sheriffs Office, Houston County District Attorney’s Office and the Solicitor General’s Office will also be in attendance.

The process is simple; it starts by bringing in a photo ID. Paperwork can be done ahead of time, or at the event center. Then, they will determine whether charges are eligible for a restriction. If they are, then the district attorney and solicitor general’s offices will look at the case, and submit it for restriction.

Charges from Houston County agencies where a person was found not guilty or dismissed, are eligible for restriction. Cases where a person was found guilty, pled guilty or nolo are not eligible.

Once record restriction goes through, it can help those who are looking for housing, employment, or other opportunities get a fresh start and a higher chance of receiving what they need, without their charge on their record.

“It minimizes their criminal history, record file for employers, and with that gone, that gives them a better opportunity to get a better job, thus making them productive citizens and not coming back to the criminal justice system,” Perry Police Chief Alan Everidge said.

The event came back in full force last year after the COVID-19 pandemic, and participating agencies are looking to grow the event and improve. According to Everidge, the event also helps in the police department’s outreach to the community.

“This gives them an opportunity; we help and to try to help folks get their records adjusted or cleaned up the best we can, that’s within the guidelines of the law, to help them move forward with their life after their original arrest,” Everidge said.

The record restriction event will take place at the Perry Events Center on July 29 from 10 AM to 2 PM.
