Perry City Council ponders response procedures to shooting situations
The Perry City Council heard a proposal Monday about training city employees how to respond to a shooting situation should one erupt at City Hall.
Lt. Chris Sutcliff of the Perry Police Department gave a presentation on “Active Shooter Response” at the council’s work session.
A person has only three choices, Sutcliff said, and they are run, hide or fight.
“When in doubt, get out,” the voice from the TV screen boomed out. “Nothing is worth going back for.”
Council watched a video about a shooting situation in a building and narrators pointed out what response was good and what was not so good.
“This training is good for our employees,” said Mayor James Faircloth.
Employees would undergo training similar to what police personnel take, said Sutcliff.
In order to prevent people from getting lackadaisical, it would take place at least twice yearly, he said.
“Let’s make it part of new employee orientation,” said Council member Phyllis Bynum-Grace.
The council agreed without taking a vote.
