Barricaded man leads to shots fired on Smithville Church Road

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is now looking into a situation on Tuesday involving a barricaded man and shots fired.

According to the GBI’s initial investigation, on July 25, around 8 p.m., deputies with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 400 block of Smithville Church Road in reference to a man making threatening and suicidal statements. Upon arrival, deputies found 41-year-old Jacob Baily barricaded in the camper he lived in.

Baily isn’t originally from the area, and had been staying at a friend’s property for a few weeks. Since Baily had military and explosives disposal experience, the GBI’s Bomb Disposal Unit also responded to the scene.

During the incident, negotiators attempted multiple times to convince Baily to surrender, while a BDU robot made its way to the camper. Baily opened the front door and shot at the robot; deputies nearby returned fire.

Baily retreated and barricaded himself again, then the Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team made entry and arrested Baily.

After examination at the hospital, Baily was found not injured and taken into custody. No officers were injured during the incident.

At this time, the GBI continues to investigate the officer involved shooting, then will submit their findings to the District Attorney’s Office.
