From Staff Reports
Westfield’s
Valerie McLure and Stephanie Campbell became the GISA champion doubles team in
AAA girls tennis, handily winning the finals last week at the John Drew Smith
Center in Macon.
The
pair was one of three doubles teams from Westfield to qualify for the doubles
draw. It all started at the Region 2-AAA championships held April 16-17. As a
result of the region tourney, Westfield sent the boys team of Tyler Moreland and
Jake Schleiger and the girls doubles teams of Sydney Barker and Laura Johnson –
in addition to McLure and Campbell – to the state individual tournament.
Moreland
and Schleiger were region runners-up, while Barker and Johnson ended the region
tourney at No. 4. McLure and Campbell easily won the region championship, defeating
Stratford in the finals.
This set the stage for the GISA Individual State Tournament. Barker and Johnson
fell in the first round to the Region 4-AAA champions and No. 1 seeded Augusta
Prep team by a tight score of 7-6, 7-5.
Moreland
and Schleiger fell in the first round to a talented Westminister team 6-1, 6-3.
McLure
and Campbell defeated Pinewood’s doubles team by a score of 6-0, 6-0. In the
second round, McLure and Campbell continued to dominate, defeating one of
Deerfield-Windsor’s doubles teams by a score of 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinal
round, McLure and Campbell took out the Augusta Prep team by a score of 6-1,
6-0. This set up the finals against a talented doubles team, again from
Deerfield-Windsor. With the final of 6-2, 6-4, these girls ended two straight
tournaments without losing one set.
