Mashburn field goal does it again in Demons 52-49 win over Coffee

Time out. Time out. Kick. Game over. That was the exact sequence with 10 seconds remaining in the game between the undefeated Warner Robins High School Demons and the visiting Coffee High School Trojans on Friday night at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. Warner Robins had the ball and 29 yards and a Eli Mashburn 29-yard game-winning field goal later they would also have a 52-49 victory. Their second three-point win of the early season was also the second game winner for mashburn who also finished the game perfect on his seven extra point attempts. How the Demons got to the point where they would need a lifesaver is an entirely different story.

After quickly falling behind 6-0 after a Dylan Fromm pass was intercepted by Trojan senior cornerback Jarquavious Jefferson and returned 20 yards for a touchdown. A Coffee missed extra point attempt would ultimately come back to haunt head coach Robby Pruitt and his team. Warner Robins would take a one point lead following a strong drive lead by Fromm as he shook off the interception and connected on passes to senior receiver Julius Cobbs and his twin brother, junior receiver Tyler Fromm before senior running back Jaeven West crossed the goal line from 11 yards out. The Trojans and Demons would exchange the lead; senior running back Jameon Gaskin would score for Coffee and give the Trojans the lead then Fromm would connect with Cobb again, this time for 88 yards to give the lead back to the Demons.

Gaskin would score again to make the score 20-14 in favor of Coffee before senior quarter Wade Sumner would connect on a 50-yard pass play to 6’3” senior receiver Dalrone Donaldson extend the Trojan lead to 27-14 late in the second quarter.

This Demons team has behind at times this season -most notably at Peach County on September 1- and they have found a win as they did on Friday night. Warner Robins pulled within six points before halftime on another Fromm to Fromm connection that set up a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Jarius Burnette.

Warner Robins would fail to trail Coffee for the rest of the game following a catch and 30 yard run and score from Cobbs that gave the Demons a 28-27 lead early in the third quarter. Tyler Fromm would catch another Dylann Fromm touchdown pass to put the Demons ahead by eight points before West crossed the goal line on the next offensive possession to make the score 42-27.

Coffee lost a game by two points last week at Tift County and they would lose this one by three points but not without putting up a valiant offensive effort. Down by 22 points late in the third quarter, Sumner and Donaldson would connect again from 24 yards away to cut the lead to 49-34 at the end of the period. Warner Robins would not need to score again until Mashburn’s field goal.

The Demons will open 1-AAAAA play at Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville on Friday night.
