FVSU’s TEAM Success Program

By Leon Porter, FVSU Program Assistant

The TEAM Success program at Ft. Valley State University started in 2006 under the leadership of Dr. Carol Ann Johnson, Retired Associate Director of Fort Valley State University Extension Service. TEAM Success is the acronym for Teaching, Enlightening, Achieving and Mentoring.

The goal of the program is to provide one-on-one knowledge and exposure about careers in agriculture, family and consumer sciences and related areas to high school students in grades 10 through 12. The program duration is six weeks and students are paid for their time.

To be considered for this program, the applicant must be entering the 11th or 12th grade or be graduating from high school. He or she must write a one page essay which answers the question “What characteristics do I have that will help me succeed in life?”

The student must be committed to six uninterrupted weeks of full participation in the program. He must have a 2.4 cumulative grade point average and be a citizen of the United States. He must be at least 16 years old by April 5 and be interested in a career in family and consumer sciences, agriculture, or a related field. He must live in a county where an FVSU Extension Agent or Program Assistant is based. Houston County is fortunate to have a FVSU Program Assistant based in the Extension Office in Perry.

Once the student has met all these qualifications, he must submit a completed application which includes his official high school transcript for the previous year; three letters of recommendation from school teachers, administrators or community leaders; and his one page essay mentioned above.

The application process starts in January and students are selected in May. Applications for the 2013 program are already in and TEAM Success members will be notified soon of their acceptance into the program.

Parents interested in applying for this program for their students for next year should contact Leon Porter, Fort Valley State University Extension Program Assistant, Houston County Extension Office, at 478-987-2028, Ext. 244.
