Crossroads Cougars Rally for Reading at Westside Elementary

Special to the Journal

Crossroads students recently gave of their time and talents to share their love of reading with the first-grade students at Westside Elementary School. The books they shared were selected by the Crossroads students as their favorite children books.

In addition to acting as guest readers, the Cougars assisted Westside teachers with making Dr. Seuss hats for the kids, passing out “literacy bags” to each student and talking with the first graders about the importance of being a good reader. Each literacy bag included a few school supplies and a free book for each child.

Each first grade teacher also received a “Read Across America 2013” poem, a classroom “Cat in the Hat” doll, and candies for their class party.

This event was part of Crossroads’ continued commitment to “giving back to the community through literacy awareness.” The Crossroads guest readers included: Jessica Andersen, Austin Day, Ben Haywood, Jeff Hurt, Alexus Parker, Dusty Parker and Christoni Williamson. Crossroads principal, Ronnie Walker, and media specialist Michael Lashley assisted their students with book ideas and arrangements for this event.

Lashley said, “It is our hope that this will inspire more parents to read to their children daily. After all, Dr. Seuss said it best…‘You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.’”
