Perry’s Buzzard Drop New Year’s Eve celebration a hit

Downtown Perry was “abuzz” with people gathered for the city’s annual Buzzard Drop New Year’s Eve celebration. The streets were lined with lights and decorations for the event that began at 7 p.m. with DJ Mixmaster, T. Taylor.

Special Events Coordinator Anya Turpin said, “We’re so excited that everyone is coming together. We had such a big year full of fun events, a lot of successes as a city and as a community. So we’re super excited to end the year and celebrate with everyone right here in the city, and ring in the New Year together.”

For an early night, the “Kiddie Countdown” began at 7:59 p.m. with a celebration at 8 p.m. Food trucks from Chile Street Eats, Sofrito, and J’s Smokin’ BBQ were on scene, Just Tap’d manned a booth, and Bodega Brew also participated, with special menu items, in addition to beverages throughout the evening.

A stage was set up for the band, RELAPSE, who played from 9 p.m. to approximately midnight with styles of soul, beach, shag, country, and disco. The official Buzzard Drop tower countdown began at 11:50 and ended 2019 with a midnight celebration, ringing in the New Year as a crowd. Beginning at 10 p.m., complimentary shuttle rides to anywhere in Perry city limits were offered by the Perry Police Department.

Dara Dossett West said her and her family had a great time. “Music was wonderful. So much fun, such a great event for everyone. Thanks Perry. We will be back,” West said.

Anita Cassell said she liked the band as well as the DJ; “Had a good time. Thanks Perry for putting this on. Looking forward to next year,” Cassell said.
